Dan Aykroyd Reveals the Story for ‘Ghostbusters 3’

Like it or not, A third film in the Ghostbusters movie is headed our direction. The project is still early in the planning stages, but a script is ready to go and most of the cast is slated to return, with Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two films, is ready to get behind the camera once more. While talking to Larry King, who we now know will also be reprising his brief role in the three-quel, Dan Aykryod, who’s been the driving force behind the film, gives us a bit of an update on what we can expect in regards to a story.

“It’s based on new research that’s being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University. Basically, there’s research being done that I can say that the world or the dimension that we live in, our four planes of existence, length, height, width and time, become threatened by some of the research that’s being done. Ghostbusters — new Ghostbusters — have to come and solve the problem.”

Doesn’t sound…horrible. For those still holding out hope that Bill Murray will have a change of heart, it sounds like Aykroyd shares your feelings as they’ve left a spot for him should he decide to join the reunion. “There will be a hole for him. If Billy wants to walk in the door and be in the movie, we will find a place.” Let’s hope he does decide to come back, as I can’t imagine seeing the Ghostbusters without the comedian involved.

As mentioned previously, the Ghostbusters 3 will see a new group of busters come onto the scene, all of which start out as Columbia University students. Casting for this new group has yet to begin, despite previous rumors we’ve heard. The script was written by Gene Stupnitsky, Lee Eisenberg and Etan Cohen. A release date has yet to be set, but it is expected sometime in 2014, which would coincide with the 30th anniversary of the original film.
