Mattel and Hasbro both unveiled some — or all — of their upcoming Comic-Con International exclusives that are available in San Diego this July. As if all that wasn’t enough, there’s new stuff from the blockbuster “Iron Man 3,” the highly anticipated “Man of Steel” film and even older properties like “Lost in Space” and “Doctor Who” have something in the works. Check them all out in this week’s edition of TOYING AROUND!
MATTEL CCI EXCLUSIVES | Mattel helped kick off pre-Comic-Con International in San Diego fervor byunveiling a dozen exclusives they’ll have available at the Con. We’ve already seen the “Back to the Future II” hoverboards as well as
MATTYCOLLECTOR | Mattel also revealed the full slate of figures that go up for sale on Mattycollector.comJune 17. Quick-acting purchasers are able to buy brand new figures of Red Hood from DC Comics and Octavia from Masters of the Universe Classics. They’ll also have remaining stock of Man-At-Arms and Leech from MOTUC available.
STAR WARS BLACK SERIES | USA Today scored a first look at a highly anticipated Comic-Con International exclusive figure pack from Hasbro. As if the 6-inch line of Star Wars Black Series toys wasn’t enough of a drool-worthy idea for collectors, now there’s a Boba Fett with Han Solo in Carbonite available — but only at the Con! The nefarious bounty hunter also comes with a pair of blasters and his iconic jet pack.
IRON MAN 3 | Ben Kingsley turned in a star performance in “Iron Man 3” from Marvel Studios and now he gets his own action figure! io9 debuted the first image of Hasbro’s 6-inch figure of the villain in all his camo-wearing, sword-wielding glory. He’s part of the company’s Iron Monger build-a-figure wave.
MAN OF STEEL | At Toy Fair we saw some of NECA’s plans for quarter scale toys based on superheroes of the big screen. Now they’re showing off a new addition to the army: Henry Cavill’s Superman from the upcoming film “Man of Steel.” The film hits on June 14 with the figure flying into stores in July.
BATMAN: ARKHAM UNHINGED | DC must have liked how Mattel’s Masters of the Universe Classic figures looked on the variant cover to “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” #1, because they’re going a similar route with the print version of “Batman: Arkham Unhinged” #17. This time, they kept things in house shooting the upcoming DC Collectibles “Arkham City” statue. The variant hits stores on Aug. 14.
MARVEL SELECT | To celebrate their long history of putting out comic-accurate versions of Marvel’s biggest heroes, Diamond Select Toys is bringing a pair of Marvel Select toys out of retirement. This summer sees the re-issue of classic Ghost Rider and Green Goblin figures in new packaging. Norman Osborn’s alter ego comes with a tied up Peter Parker and his ubiquitous glider, pumpkin bombs and purse… er satchel.
BIF BANG POW! | Collectible company Bif Bang Pow announced the acquisition of some new properties. They’re adding journals to their line of “Big Bang Theory” collectibles, like the one made to look like the show’s infamous Roommate Agreement seen here. There will also be new products based on “Adventure Time,” “The Venture Bros.” and “The Amazing Race” in the works. We’ll keep you posted as more products are announced!
DOCTOR WHO | Underground Toys is reaching deeply into the Doctor Who archives for their sets these days — the latest shown off on The Doctor Who Merchandise Site is based on the 13th season series called “Pyramids of Mars,” starring Tom Baker as the famous Time Lord. The second set based on this series includes Masked Sutekh with light up eyes, Marcus Scarman with a swap-out Jackal head, two Canopic Jars, a sarcophagus, a coordinate selector and a cardboard Osirian Rocket. The set is available in September.
LOST IN SPACE | Diamond Select Toys celebrated the 10 year anniversary of their tiny, multi-franchise MiniMates figures at this year’s C2E2. Amongst the many cases showing off figures past (including “Lord of the Rings”) and present (“Iron Man 3”), they also gave a look at the future with the upcoming “Lost in Space” based ‘Mates. They posted the image of Robot and Doctor Smith on their Facebook page without much information, but we’ll keep you posted.
POWERS | Dark Horse Deluxe made a big announcement at C2E2 — they scored the license to make collectibles based on Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming’s long-running superhero/cop comic “Powers.” Right now the plan is to create a statue based on Retro Girl — the dead hero who launched the series back in 2000 — as well as action figure and PVC sets. At this point, only turnaround artwork for the statue has been shown off, but prototypes are expected to make their debut at CCI 2013.
MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS | Tommy Oliver got a bad rap as the dastardly Green Power Ranger, but was soon vindicated and given the even cooler White Ranger guise. Bluefin Tamashii Nations is selling a version of that figure to US fans based on an Asian exclusive. Like all S.H. Figuarts figures, this one is ultra articulate, looking like it walked right off your TV and comes with weapon and hand accessories for even better posing.
INJUSTICE | Every so often DC Collectibles takes to Facebook to show off bits and pieces of a figure before revealing the whole thing in a feature dubbed “Spoiler Alert.” This week’s main offering is a pretty big bruiser, relatively speaking. Doomsday is joining the 3.75 inch scale line of figures based on the recently released “Injustice: Gods Among Us” video game. The man who broke Superman comes packed with Catwoman.
BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY | Meanwhile, this week’s DC Collectibles “Spoiler Alert” actually wound up showing off four figures all based on the “Batman: Arkham City” video game. You’ll have your chance to pick up bad guy 2-packs featuring Penguin and Sickle as well as Harley Quinn and Mr. Hammer. The company didn’t release any other details, but they have already revealed versions of Penguin and Harley in the regular line of toys.
THE MUPPETS | If you’re looking to put on a mostly head-bobbing version of “The Muppet Show,” Funko has the collectibles for you. The company announced a new line of Muppet Wacky Wobblers that kick off with Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Animal and Dr. Teeth. Look for them in stores on June 20.
MORTAL KOMBAT | Were you hoping to get your hands on a life-sized bust of Scorpion from Mortal Kombat?Well, Pop Culture Shock has the exact collectible for you. They’re currently offering a 24-inch tall, limited-to-100 piece statue of the character available only on their website. The polystone piece also features light-up LED eyes. PCS also has a Sub-Zero quarter scale statue. In addition to the basic version there’s an exclusive sold through the company’s site that has extra appendages featuring the character’s ice powers. Both pieces ship at the end of this year.
FIREFLY | Quantum Mechanix continues to provide “Firefly” and “Serenity” fans with all kinds of things to help round out their costly costumes and collections. At this point they’re selling replicas of Mal Reynolds’ dog tags which were seen on screen with the Independents Army logo, both right side up and upside down as seen on screen. The pieces are not currently up for pre-order yet, but you can head to the site and register for updates.
PSYCHO | Norma and Norman Bates might have gotten a makeover thanks to “Bates Motel,” but the classics always hold a special place in pop culture. Mezco exemplifies this with their upcoming “Psycho” entries in the Living Dead Dolls franchise. They’ve got Norman-as-Norma as well as Marion who ships in October, just in time for Halloween!
HARLEY QUINN | Sideshow Collectibles showed off a sneak preview video of their upcoming Harley Quinn Premium Format. The video includes glimpses of reference art, her gigantic mallet and even the head sculpt!
REAL STEEL | Hey remember Shawn Levy’s 2011 “Real Steel” starring Hugh Jackman and his giant robot boxing avatar? Sideshow and ThreeA Toys definitely do as you can see in this 15.75-inch figure of Atom, Jackman’s ‘bot. Comic book creator Ashley Wood runs ThreeA and knows robots, so it’s a pretty great fit.
HE-MAN | Icon Heroes continues revealing interesting He-Man and the Masters of the Universe collectibles. The 12-inch statue of He-Man based on the 80s cartoon can also be used as a paperweight. Meanwhile, there’s a 9.75-inch tall statue of Castle Grayskull which shows off the environment from all angles. The castle is available for purchase now while He-Man debuts in September.
BATMAN CLASSIC | Diamond Select Toys announced they’re getting in on the ’60s “Batman” TV show goodness this year. While specific collectibles weren’t announced, DST is known for making everything from MiniMates and bottle openers to action figures and prop replicas, so there will definitely be some interesting stuff available on their end.
TRANSFORMERS | A few weeks back Hasbro announced a new campaign giving fans the opportunity to vote on aspects of a brand new Transformer character who would not only become part of the toyline, but also the property’s ever-growing mythos. Now the Fan Built Bot poll is entering its final round of voting. The options you can now offer your input on are Names, Gender, Origin and Specialty. Go vote now!
