‘Vikings’ Brings Fun to SDCC

Comic-Con International attendees are in for better treatment than the monks of Lindisfarne, however: Costumed shieldmaidens will beckon them to board miniature Norse-styled ships, grab a paddle and race on the “Vikings” Interactive Waterway close to the convention center, and fans who turn up at the hit History show’s Friday night panel will receive a free comic book.

Hero Complex readers can take the first look at the comic’s cover, which shows the bold, bright Ragnar, his fierce, loving wife Lagertha, his envious, scheming brother Rollo and the all-father, Odin. (See a larger version of the cover here.)

The story is written by show creator Michael Hirst and features interior artwork by Dennis Calero (“X-Men Noir”). It’s set before the events of Season 1 and sees Ragnar and Rollo alongside their father in battle, along with the brothers’ first encounter with Lagertha.

If the show’s WonderCon panel in March was any indication, the “Vikings” Comic-Con hour could be a feisty one: Though his character worships Odin and Thor, star Travis Fimmel seemed more in league with Loki, mischievously joking about a risque scene involving his Ragnar, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and their captured monk Athelstan (George Blagden). Audience members intermittently roared “Ragnar!”

Fimmel, Winnick and Blagden are all scheduled to appear in San Diego and are set to be joined by Hirst, Clive Standen (Rollo), Gustaf Skarsgard (Floki), Jessalyn Gilsig (Siggy) and History executive Dirk Hoogstra.

The “Vikings” panel will take place on Friday, July 19, at 6 p.m. in the San Diego Convention Center’s Room 6A.

One thing to watch for: whether Skarsgard’s reactions are as eccentric as Floki’s.

The cast is also scheduled to appear at the “Vikings” Interactive Waterway from 11 a.m. to noon on the 19th. The attraction, which also has a photo area, runs 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Thursday, July 18, to Saturday, July 20. It will be located at 450 Second Ave.

“Vikings” was the second-most-watched cable program in the second quarter, with a viewership of 5.2 million per episode, according to Nielsen, our sister blog Company Town reported.

In her review, Times television critic Mary McNamara called the show “the tried and true story of an open-minded upstart challenging the corrupt establishment” and said that it is “a mostly noble attempt to humanize a group of people who have been reduced to the fact of their stature (tall) and their propensity for barbarism.”

It returns for Season 2 next year.

No ‘Hobbit’ Panel at SDCC

J. R. R. Tolkien fans hoping for a glimpse of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” in Hall H will have to wait. The second “Hobbit” movie won’t be coming to San Diego’s Comic-Con International, director Peter Jackson announced Monday on the film’s production blog.

“I just want to pass on some news, which I’m sure is going to be disappointing to anyone going toComic-Con this year, any fans,” Jackson said in a video posted on the blog. “A couple of days ago I told [Warner Bros.] that I just really wasn’t ready to present anything of ‘The Desolation of Smaug’ at Comic-Con this year.”

Disappointing it may be — especially for attendees who are shining their One Rings and getting their elf ears fitted for some Tolkien-themed cosplay — but at least Jackson appears to have a good reason for shirking the “Comic-Con burden”: He’s got his hands full actually making the movie.

“We’re still shooting, and we’re going to be shooting through the period of Comic-Con,” he said in the video (watch it below). “I’m so busy shooting … that every hour that I spend focusing on a really great reel for Comic-Con — and it would have to be great — would be hours spent away from the vital job of making the second and third ‘Hobbit’ films as cool as they can possibly be.”

At last year’s expo, of course, Jackson unveiled more than 12 minutes of footage from “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first installment in the planned trilogy. And on the convention floor, Warner Bros. handed out acorn pins (like Bilbo’s) from its enormous “Hobbit”-themed booth. It’s likely that despite its absence from Hall H, “The Hobbit” will still get some promotion on the convention floor.

“The Desolation of Smaug,” which hits theaters Dec. 13, is part two in the series, following last year’s box-office hit “An Unexpected Journey.” “Desolation” picks up where the first film left off, after hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the dwarfs escape from a band of bloodthirsty orcs.

The film introduces several new characters, including the titular dragon Smaug (played by Benedict Cumberbatch through performance-capture technology), Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans), skinchanger Beorn (Mikael Persbrandt) and Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly), an elf woman created for the film.

In addition to Bilbo and Gandalf, other returning characters include wizard Radagast the Brown (Sylvester McCoy) and dwarf king Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and his company of dwarf warriors. Orlando Bloom is reprising his “The Lord of the Rings” role as fan-favorite elf warrior Legolas.

Like its predecessor, “The Desolation of Smaug” was shot in 3-D at 48 frames per second and will be released in 2-D, High Frame Rate 3-D, other 3-D formats and IMAX.

The third and final film in the trilogy, ‘The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” is slated for a December 2014 release.

‘Haven’ Gets a Presence at SDCC

For the first time ever, “Haven” will have a panel at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con. The stars of this science-fiction show made a video to celebrate. Check out what actors Emily RoseLucas BryantEric BalfourAdam Copeland and Colin Ferguson have to say.

In the past, there has been a “Haven” presence at Comic-Con, but this is the first time the show — going into its fourth season on Syfy this fall — has had a panel. The video makes it sound like the stars plan to make it all as big as possible on this first shot at the full SDCC insanity.

Much of the announcement video is rather entertaining, but there are still a few special highlights:

  • Balfour’s rain-drenched “Welcome to Camp Haven! Where it’s always summer!” is just about perfect.
  • Why does Ferguson’s voice echo so much? Where is he?
  • The rain on the camera during Lucas Bryant’s and the bugs during Adam Copeland’s bits are a nice touch.
  • Scavenger hunt! They’re doing a scavenger hunt?
  • This may bring new meaning to the term “rain dance.”

The “Haven” panel at Comic-Con will be on Friday, July 19 at 3pm in Room 6DE.

‘Divergent’ Cast and Panel at SDCC

Divergent is a film we’re looking forward to primarily because of the great cast that’s been assembled for it. If you feel the same, and are attending the 2013 SDCC, read on for the details of what Summit has planned for the event.

Summit Entertainment will showcase the film adaption of the #1 New York Times best-selling novel Divergent at Comic-Con 2013 as follows:
