Andrew Garfield, who took over the role of Peter Parker and his superhero alter ego in Marc Webb’s 2012 feature “The Amazing Spider-Man,” will appear in person Friday, July 19, at San Diego’s Comic-Con International as part of Sony’s panel presentation in Hall H, the studio confirmed Wednesday.
The actor — along with producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, Webb and actors Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan – will be in attendance to tout “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” which is set for release May 2, 2014.
Emma Stone will return in the Webb-directed sequel as Gwen Stacy, with Chris Cooper and DeHaan joining the cast as Norman Osborn and his son Harry, Paul Giamatti reportedly as villain the Rhino, and Colm Feore and Felicity Jones in roles yet to be announced. Foxx is playing the villain Electro in the film.
The Sony session, which will take place in the convention’s marquee 6,500-seat ballroom, also will offer detailed looks at the animated entry “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2″ — with a panel for the Sept. 27 release comprising voice actors Anna Faris and Terry Crews and directors Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn — and the studio’s remake of “Robocop.”
That film’s stars, Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish and Samuel L. Jackson, will appear in person with director Jose Padilha to discuss the movie, a new take on the 1987 sci-fi satire due out in February.
Additionally, Screen Gems’ upcoming “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” will take the Hall H stage with a panel featuring stars Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan and Kevin Zegers, director Harald Zwart and author Cassandra Clare, whose bestselling urban fantasy novels inspired the film, which opens Aug. 21.
Back in 2011, Garfield won over fans in Hall H, appearing in the audience in a Spider-Man costume and delivering a speech about his deep affection for the character.
“I wouldn’t be able to stand here if it wasn’t for Spider-Man,” he said at the time. “I’m living out every skinny boy’s fantasy of being stronger. We all wished we had the courage to stand up for ourselves, for the people we loved…. This is the coolest moment of my life. Thank you for being here to share it with me.”
In June, Sony announced that two additional “Spider-Man” sequels starring Garfield are set for release on June 10, 2016, and May 4, 2018.
Earlier this summer, photographers snapped shots from the set of the production of Garfield and Stone together, and of Jamie Foxx as Electro.
