’50 Shades’ fans in an uproar over casting

Casting news broke for Fifty Shades of Grey this week and fans have been nothing less than vocal about the choices made for the roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. Many fans were torn by the news that Charlie Hunnam, star of the hit FX show Sons of Anarchy and this summers smash hit Pacific Rim, had been signed on to play Christian while less well known actress Dakota Johnson, seen in The Social Network and Beastly, would be portraying Ana.

While it’s no surprise that fans would be upset after months and months of hoping that favorites Ian Somerhalder or Matt Bomer would snag the coveted role of Christian and that Alexis Bledel would snag the role of Ana. However are fans going to far? Today we find out that fans have started a petition wanting to veto the casting decision made. The petition, which currently has over 19,000 signatures, states:

Matt Bomer is the PERFECT DESCRIPTION OF CHRISTIAN GREY AND ALEXIS BLEDEL IS THE PERFECT ACTRESS TO REPRESENT ANASTASIA STEELE and if THEY ARE NOT, NOBODY WILL BE And I read the whole trilogy and I can assure that Matt is the perfect actor for this movie and Alexis too. So please PLEASE, all of the GREYsessed and Bomerettes in the world NEED those actors. They always will be for us the Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. WE CAN DO ANYTHING GUYS, ANYTHING.

Crew for the film hit social media today defending their casting choices:

While I support people having their opinions, some of the comments being made to those working on the film have been downright disrespectful and nasty. Please keep some decorum when you’re responding about your disappointment about the casting. Although I am not the number one fan of casting, I will at least withhold criticizing the film until I see it.

Fifty Shades of Grey is slated to hit theaters August 2014.
