After much hype leading up the release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, most were expecting an incredible theater presence.
The film, which cost approximately $60 million to make, was expected to pull in enough money and more to cover production costs. According to The Huffington Post, opening weekend TMI came out in third on the box office ranking with only a $9.3 million gross. The first five days of release the film made a low $14 million.
The numbers are staggering to say the least. What was once a project full of excitement and deemed to be a sure thing in box office hits, is now drastically falling in the box office. As of Tuesday the film has only made $33 million, nowhere near paying for the cost of production.
With production on The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes slated to begin this September, we have to wonder how the box office numbers will affect production budget on the new film.
I posted my own personal review of the film just yesterday! Be sure to check that out and leave your thoughts!
